MES Technoservice Malaysia (MTM) is pleased to announce the successful completion of a comprehensive Hybrid Battery Replacement project for SPIL in Indonesia. This project involved three units of MITSUI-Paceco 41-ton Hybrid Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes (Units RTG01, RTG02, and RTG03).
The primary objective was to replace aging battery systems to ensure stable operations, enhanced safety, and continued energy efficiency for the terminal’s hybrid fleet.
Project Overview and Execution
The work was carried out between April 6 and April 10, 2026, led by MTM Technical Support Specialist in coordination with SPIL’s electrical service team.
The scope of work for each RTG included:
- Safety & Preparation: Comprehensive pre-work inspections and safety meetings (Toolbox/KY) to identify hazards related to high-voltage battery handling.
- System Upgrades: Installation of 18 new GS YUASA (LIM25H-8S3-F1) Li-ion batteries per unit, along with new harness cables, busbars, and updated LIBM II cards and LCD monitors.
- Software Optimization: The MTM team uploaded modified PLC programs to ensure the new hardware integrated seamlessly with the existing crane systems.
Rigorous Testing and Validation
To ensure reliability under real-world conditions, each crane underwent a series of function tests witnessed by SPIL representatives. These tests included:
- No-Load & Rated Load Tests: Verifying hoist, trolley, and gantry performance with no load and a full 41-ton rated load.
- System Stability: Monitoring battery cell voltage balance, SOC (State of Charge), and engine output voltages at various RPMs.
Results and Recommendations
All three units (RTG01, RTG02, and RTG03) are now back in full operation, meeting all performance criteria with no alarms or abnormal logs observed during testing.
As part of our commitment to long-term maintenance, MTM identified and reported specific hardware wear, such as terminal block damage on RTG01, and has provided recommendations for genuine part replacements to ensure the continued longevity of the equipment.
This project underscores MTM’s dedication to supporting our partners in the maritime industry with world-class technical service and innovative hybrid solutions.
